Emotional Labor and Why It Matters in Menopause

In this episode Clarissa talks to Dr Regina Lark feminist historian, and founder of A Clear Path: Professional Organizing and Productivity about Emotional Labor, what it is and how changes in our executive functioning during menopause i.e.fatigue, insomnia, brain fog, anxiety and more make us feel overburdened.

Although it is 2022, women that despite advances in “sharing the household tasks” with partners, they still carry the largest share of what Dr Lark calls the emotional labor for the family. And that this also shows up in the workplace where women also pick up caring-type duties.

The “unwritten job description” lead women to feel hyper-responsible for tending to the “niceties of life”; everything from remembering their mother-in-law’s birthday, their sister’s anniversary, sending flowers for sympathy, making sure the children have regular doctor and dentist appointments, writing thank you notes, planning parties, problem solving, attending to hurt feelings, teacher conferences, and on and on, and, of course, as the authors describe so colorfully, making sure that no one goes without the “f—ing ketchup! “

Regina also shares valuable tips and tools for supporting us to better manage emotional labor - Radical Delegation, Deliberate Dialogue, Planning for Additional Labor
